Paint colors that can boost home value

Research has shown that color can be a powerful tool to alter one’s general mood. However, color can also have a great impact on the value of a home. With the right choice of hues used in strategic areas of the home, you can increase its value by as much as $5,000, according to a recent Zillow report.

If you are posturing to sell your Washington State home in the near future, it matters to know about the colors that will work best for your living spaces. In doing so, you’re setting yourself up for a windfall of profits. Below are some recommendations for four important areas of the home, endorsed by interior designers to serve as your guide in your home makeover.

Kitchen

Recommended: White. This color has always been considered as the benchmark for cleanliness. Designers also agree that this particular neutral color is fool-proof against value declines.

Alternatives: Off-white/cream/yellow; dark colors of blue, gray, and green. While generally, Zillow advises against dark colors in one’s living spaces, they take exception to the kitchen as many homebuyers have been seen to gravitate toward these colors in the kitchen.

No-nos: Bold hues of red, yellow, and green; pink. Bright red in the heart of the home particularly drives buyer attention away, resulting in a decrease in home value by as much as $1,500 to $3,000

Living room

Recommended: Taupe and other earthy colors, gray. One thing common among these colors are that they’re neutral and provide a clean slate that potential buyers can use as they imagine themselves relaxing in your living room.

Alternatives: Pastel hues of green and yellow, dark gray, white. Softer hues in this part of the home add to its calming effect. Dark gray, meanwhile, brings some dramatic flavor to your living room.

No-nos: Bright green and yellow, pink. Buyers weren’t sold on homes they visited with living rooms in these colors. The lack of buyer enthusiasm is bound to have an impact on home value, as well.

Bedroom

Recommended: Dark blue. This is one area of the house that can get away with a bold color – and dark blue lends elegance and sophistication to this private part of the home. Even buyers approve.

Alternatives: Offshoots of blue, gray, white. One cannot deny the relaxing vibe projected by the color blue, and that’s why it’s a perfect choice for the one place at home where relaxation and recharging are king.

No-nos: Bright colors. Designers and homebuyers agree that having a bedroom in eye-popping hues defeats the room’s purpose.

Bathroom

Recommended: Light blue or purple. A bathroom in any of these two cool shades can influence buyer interest and, more importantly, bring about higher home value.

Alternatives: gray, light yellow, off-white. Gray is another cool neutral color that gives off a spa-like vibe in bathrooms. Meanwhile, yellow and off-white are more interesting spinoffs of the classic bathroom tile white.

No-nos: Bright colors, pink. Bold hues are best left to accent walls or furniture but not as the overall color theme of bathrooms.
