Man in a running trail in Wenatchee, WA

Running makes you feel better. Running outdoors boosts well-being and mental clarity. Going through winding trails, adjusting one’s pace over various grades, gauging the landscape, and hearing yourself inhale and exhale helps to get you in the moment so worries recede.

Wenatchee, WA is rich with such natural stress-busters like running trails. Here are your options.

Apple Capital Recreation Loop

Hugging the Columbia River and located along Lincoln Rock State Park, this trail boasts 22 miles of asphalt and so much to view and do. It cuts across four riverfront parks: Wenatchee Riverfront Park with its sculpture garden, railroad, docks, and boat launch; Walla Walla Point Park with its sports fields, swimming lagoon, and open space; Horan Nature Area with its wetlands; and Wenatchee Confluence State Park which has a campsite, swimming area, and picnic grounds. Its wider East Wenatchee side cuts across bluffs, ravines with tight turns, and short six percent grades.

Coal Mines Trail

This trail cuts across three small towns and runs through a tree-lined path. It crosses Roslyn, site of the TV show “Northern Exposure.” Roslyn Museum is a block away. The tree-lined route continues until the trail ends outside the city.

Necklace Valley

This sub-alpine valley lined with meadows winds through an old railroad, Alpine Lakes Wilderness, and a river. Brace yourself for steep, rough terrain from here. Then relax in river campsites scattered all over the place.

Middle Fork Snoqualmie River Trail

This may be hard to navigate when it connects with other trails (some of them unmaintained). Expect streams and forest road crossings. Hikers and horseback riders are also welcome.

Sage Hills

Drink in the beauty of wildflowers and sweeping views, thrill to the sound of chirping birds, and race across meandering trails. Sage Hills’s 900-foot elevation makes it a cool place to be. The seven-mile trail (round trip) will test your endurance. The kids can take a hike and a leashed pet is welcome.

Saddle Rock

A nine-mile run – three to the top and back, six to the bottom of the other side and back – awaits everyone. See breathtaking views of metro Wenatchee and the surrounding Columbia River. Wildflowers bloom during springtime.

Horan Natural Area

This area where Wenatchee meets Columbia has lots of waterfowl, songbirds, deer, and small animals. Cottonwood trees north of the area invite runners to rest under a leafy shade.

Colchuck Lake

This eight-mile run goes through meadows and offers views of Dragontail Peak. A blue-green lake awaits runners. But dogs are off-limits in this place located 2,200 feet above sea level.

Icicle Gorge Trail

This decades-old trail has old bridges, rock walls, wildflowers, and Icicle Creek written all over it. Its flat, shaded terrain makes it a great summer adventure.
