Great fishing spots near Wenatchee

Man fishing in Wenatchee

Chelan County in Washington State has several landlocked bodies of water with a good number of fishing spots that anglers from all over the country constantly visit. Whether these are man-made reservoirs or natural mountain lakes, the waters offer a fantastic combination of abundant – sometimes, rare – fish to catch and awe-inspiring natural scenery.

Wenatchee alone is a great venue for taking to the waters to do some serious fishing. The lake here is the stuff of legend among many sport anglers for its kokanee – a type of large landlocked sockeye salmon and a common find in the state.

Other nearby areas have their respective species of fish teeming in their lakes, enough to keep a serious angler busy and determined to have a decent catch. But before going fishing anywhere in the Evergreen State, one has to make sure they secure a license and/or permit from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Listed below are some of the best fishing spots near Wenatchee:

Lake Chelan

This is the largest lake in the state, stretching for more than 50 miles from the city of Chelan to Stehekin. Big schools of kokanee thrive here, as well as several other varieties of trout. One distinct characteristic of this fishing spot is that it’s not uncommon to catch exceptionally large fish here. From some good-sized rainbow trout to rare Chinook salmon to record-breaking massive mackinaws, these prize catches make every visit to Lake Chelan worth the trip.

Beehive Reservoir

Don’t let this man-made lake’s size fool you. This 12-acre reservoir located eight miles southwest of Wenatchee is a trout lover’s hotspot. During open season for fishing from April to October, there are up to 20,000 rainbow trout to catch in the area.

When not fishing, the lakeshores of Beehive Reservoir are perfect destinations for land-based activities like hiking and mountain climbing. However, camping is not allowed here.

Fish Lake

This 500-acre lake lives up to its name for being an angler’s paradise. It offers year-round fishing to tourists and residents alike. In the spring, anglers are allowed to catch as much as 15,000 rainbow trout in the area. By fall, Fish Lake becomes a destination for fly fishing.

Fish Lake is a 24-mile drive from the Bavarian village-inspired town of Leavenworth, near Lake Wenatchee.

Domke Lake

There’s a certain level of challenge when coming to Domke Lake to fish. Prior to casting your fishing rod into its waters, you first have to hike on an upward trail from Lucerne. For your efforts, you will be rewarded with significant catches of cutthroat and rainbow trout.

The cutthroat stock here is constantly replenished to supplement the natural production by pouring in cutthroat fry via aircraft.
