Rock island: Expansive and exhilarating

Washington is home to many bustling cities where time never seems to stand still and everyone is always on the go. Thankfully, if you’re looking to live somewhere more laid-back, there’s always Rock Island.

Located in the so-called teacup valley, this city of some 800 folk sits on the shores of the majestic Columbia River, right at the foot of an abundance of rolling hills. With its expansive skies and sizable plots of land, Rock Island offers you all the space you need to build a home away from the madding crowd.

A closer look

Rock Island is located in Douglas County, and is part of the Wenatchee–East Wenatchee Metropolitan Statistical Area. Originally called Hammond, it was first inhabited by the Native American tribes. With the construction of the Great Northern Railway, it transformed into a thriving railroad town.

This small community’s current name comes from the eponymous rock islands in the Columbia River. It is today home to some 270 households (as of the 2000 census).

Nature and leisure

One of the most remarkable features of Rock Island is its five lakes. If you’re an avid fisherman, come and cast your lines at Putters Lake, Big Bow Lake, Hammond Lake, Hideaway Lake, or Pit Lake—but be sure to secure a fishing license first.

Looking to sharpen your golfing skills? You’ll be glad to know that Rock Island is home to three notable golf destinations: Alta Lake Golf Resort, Bear Mountain Ranch, and Desert Canyon Golf Resort. You can get five-day, seven-day, couple, or family passes which will also grant you discounts at any of the golf courses.

Wholesome family fun

Rock Island has several signature events that bring the community together.

In the spring, there’s Fishing Days, a kids-and-teens-only fishing event hosted by the city. The young participants get to test their fishing skills against their peers, while competing for prizes and giveaways.

Mini-Hydroplane Races take place in August, drawing huge crowds eager to see the participants test their mettle.

Then there’s the Rod Run, a local car show held in September that gives gearheads the chance to show off their prized vehicles.

Rock island, WA real estate options

You won’t find condos and high rises in Rock Island—but single family homes abound. Owing to the generous lot sizes available, homes in general tend to be pretty spacious.

Style-wise, many lean towards a homey country-home vibe, as befits the rustic and laid-back atmosphere of the city. A number of the most desirable properties are located in premier gated communities and have dock access to the river.

Houses are anywhere from 2,000 to 3,000 sq. ft. in size, often with three to four bedrooms. Given the unspoiled location and scenic views, properties here typically fetch upwards of $500,000.
