Boost your productivity and stay focused while working from your Lake Chelan home with these home office set-up tips.

Choose the right spot

When deciding where to set up your home office, think about the kind of space that will keep you engaged and motivated as you work through the day. Ideally, you should work in a clean, well-lit, and well-ventilated room or corner of the house. Make sure that there’s enough space for a desk, chair, and any office equipment you might need. There should also be enough sockets for all of your chargers and electronics.

Since you’ll be staring at your screen for hours on end, you can minimize eye strain by placing your desk near a window so you can look outside and rest your eyes from time to time. If this isn’t possible, place your desk near the door, which you can open when you need to take a break from your screen. You can also hang a painting or a photo on the wall behind your computer just so you have something to look at other than your screen.

Your home office should be located in a quiet and distraction-free part of the house so you can stay focused while you work. Avoid high-traffic areas near the front door, main corridor, or dining area.

Lastly, choose a spot with strong wifi signal so that you can work continuously without having to check your connectivity every now and then.

Invest in high-quality furniture

Maintaining good posture is crucial to preventing strain injuries and musculoskeletal disorders like carpal tunnel syndrome, back problems, and muscle tension in the neck. To maintain proper posture while working from home, consider investing in ergonomic furniture, including:

  • Standing desk – Sitting for long periods is associated with chronic diseases. Using a standing desk in place of a regular one can help you avoid being seated for too long. Choose one that can be raised and lowered. A standing desk will be better for your back, hips, knees, and overall health.
  • Ergonomic chair – If you prefer a regular desk and chair, invest in a well-design chair that will prevent you from slouching and putting excess strain on your neck and back. An ergonomic chair will provide sufficient support for your weight and lumbar for better overall posture.
  • Floating shelves – These shelves are useful for storing and organizing office supplies and work documents in full view, so you won’t have trouble looking for the stapler or last week’s report. Floating shelves are also excellent for décor. Fill them with potted plants, framed photos, and other knick-knacks that inspire you.
  • External monitor – Staring at a small laptop screen for long periods can harm your eyesight. Using a large external monitor can help minimize the train on your eyes and give you a better view of highly detailed work files.

Your home office is a personal space that you can set up and decorate as you please. But having these home office essentials will help you get started.
