5 ways to spend your free time while staying home

Being cooped up at home during the pandemic was challenging to say the least. At first, it was nice not to have to get dressed, go out, and travel to work every day; but after a while, being in the same place all day every day can take its toll on one’s mental and physical health.

If you remain stuck at home for whatever reason, here are some ways to keep yourself busy and entertained while still being productive:

  1. Keep a journal
  2. Writing your thoughts down can feel cathartic, and can help you organize and process your thoughts, even when you’re overwhelmed. You can write about your feelings, the highlights of your day, and it can also be as simple as just logging your daily activities and accomplishments. Spend a few minutes to journal either at the start of the day, or at the end of the day before sleeping.

  3. Learn a skill
  4. If you’ve been wanting to learn how to bake a cake, or how to play an instrument, what better time than now? Look for tutorials online as you fumble your way through it. You can also sign up for courses online – there are a wide variety of classes you can take, both paid and free. Taking the time to learn something new is a productive way to keep yourself entertained. It’s even more satisfying when you learn a new skill on your own.

  5. Get some exercise
  6. The downside to being stuck at home is the general inactivity – you’re mostly just sitting or lying down, and your daily steps are also much less than when you’re outside the house. However, it’s important to take care of your health, both physical and mental, and you can do this by exercising. You don’t even need equipment; there are plenty of ways to improvise with the stuff you already have at home.

  7. Read a book
  8. All of us probably have a reading list we’ve been putting off, or a pile of books waiting to be cracked open. What better time to read one than now? Reading takes your mind off things and gets your imagination running. Whether it’s fiction or nonfiction, books can improve your vocabulary, exercise your brain, offer a fresh perspective on things, and best of all, entertain you. If you don’t like reading, there are a ton of audiobooks available online for your perusal.

  9. Declutter and organize
  10. Being stuck at home can put things in perspective. You might notice that there are a lot of things you don’t really need, or there might be a room that could be repurposed into something else. Grab the chance to declutter your home Marie Kondo-style, and reorganize your home into one that sparks joy all around. Get some plants to decorate around your house as well – these are not only aesthetically pleasing but are also good for providing extra oxygen, especially if you’re unable to step out for some fresh air.
